Shadow Lives

Gen Con Needs You!

Every year I work Gen Con in Indiana as part of the Shadowrun Demo team.
What that means is I get comped to GM games at the biggest gaming con in the US.
Its 20 hours of work, but over a 4 day con (Thu 8/4-8/7) it leaves plenty of time left to enjoy the con.

Comp isn’t amazing, but it certainly makes the convention more attendable.

  • Free con admission
  • hotel arrangements made for you (4 to a room)
  • $125 hotel reimbursement
  • Limited swag (shirt, special edition GM screen)

This year we are LOW ON GMS!
We should have about 30, but we have about 20.

What that means is, that if you ever considered going to Gen Con now is the time!
Free admission and reduced cost for hotel!

The House Always Wins

The agent helped himself to a drink to steel his nerves. He had truly drawn the short straw this time, he had a skeleton key and his wits to do a bit of recon, no armor, no gear, nothing! Finally he took a deep breath and headed towards the “staff only” door. A quick swip of his key and the door buzzed open.

Quickly pocketing the key he walked in, trying to look the roll of confident, rich, gambler. His clothing was a step above middle class, but not by much. Fortunately the guards didn’t look twice. They were well trained, making sure to check for weapons or anything which would allow him to cheat, but glossing over his identify.

The elevator ride down was quick, he considered skipping to the second sublevel, but knew the boss wouldn’t approve. He had to do this job thoroughly if he wanted his cred. He headed into the high stakes room on the first sublevel. The description he had been provided was accurate. He recorded as many faces as he could and scouted the room.

He was glad he only had to scout, there was too much muscle (and money) in here for him to feel safe doing anything else. It didn’t help that he couldn’t avoid the cameras if he tried! Playing a few rounds of slots as he scanned the room, he confirmed there was no wireless access to the server. The only way to access it was to break into the security office. Getting in would be easy enough, it was just a deadbolt, but that wasn’t his job.

Time passed and he knew he could no longer procrastinate. He headed down to the second sublevel, his skeleton key making quick work of the lock. He was tempted to see what sort of debachery went on in the gentleman’s club, but he knew every swipe here was tracked. His key was good, but he knew better than to push his luck. He went straight to the Fight Club instead. Holding his breath as he swiped, he was pleased it went through.

The floor was lively with people betting on the amature fight going on. People were drinking, smoking, and engaging in most vices imaginable. Security kept a sharp watch out for violence, but aside from the fight it seemed under control. He wandered the room, read the odds and rules, and observed as much as he could. This security office looked much sturdier than the rest, the biometrically locked door was the only access to the room and there was no useful wireless either.

The data he had been provided was valid and was the best that could be expected given the circumstances. He’s report to his boss that the runners had indeed done their job and should be properly compensated.

Midnight Visitor

His security system woke him long before the pounding at his door began. No fewer than six drones were streaming live video feed of the guest and an equal number were on combat standby inside. Recognizing the image he told the combat drones to stand down and carefully removed his arm from under his sleeping lover. Grabbing his warhawk from the nightstand, he quietly left the bedroom. A quick glance as he closed the door showed that his departure was unnoticed, which was relief since he knew how she felt about his visitor.

Another glance at the security feeds showed the normally jubilant Bounce waiting outside the door, leaning against it and occasionally banging for attention. Her eyes were brimming with tears and her lip was quivering. As soon as he opened the door she came rushing in, throwing herself into his arms and sobbing. She was oblivious to chill of his touch or the feel of the gun on her back. He gently pulled her out of the doorway and allowed the door to close as she attempted to talk through her tears.

The words came out as gibberish but he knew what she was trying to say. He had known it was only a matter of time before she learned of her friend’s death. This was the poor girl’s first view of how deadly the shadows could be. He had done his best to shelter her from the cruel truth of the world, but had been ready for this day ever since she first got involved with the anarchists.

Holding her close he comforted her and let her cry herself out…

Fox Tales Blog

Konnichiwa Friends!
Welcome to this exciting third entry of Fox Tales.

To those of you who haven’t visited my little corner of the ‘trix before, I’m Kit. I’m relatively new to the exciting city of Boston!
I don’t know about you, but I like puzzles. I heard about a neat little puzzle on the streets which was paying 2500 nuyen!
That’s like a month of REAL food, none of that flavorless soy. This mysterious person named Tarot was giving out cards that had puzzles to be solved.

A bunch of people tried to solve it on their own, but some guy who called himself Etrine on the ‘trix tried to gather people to work on it together. He didn’t show up, unless he was that guy Apollo who seemed to take charge…
But anyways… I showed up since it sounded like it might be fun (and the food). I was right! It was hilarious, Apollo and Time-san stood around arguing what to do while Z-san (not the automaker!) went full VR in the middle of the street. I had fun with his pockets (and I gave everything back!)

Apollo seemed to be the leader. He was the mage and I think he’s rich. He’s nice, I guess, he did give me food and all, but he also kind of scares me. He wants to study me, nothing yaoi or anything… I think he’s interested in the awakened world. I’ll have to ask oneesan about it.

I had a hard time with Time-san’s name. I can write it though, Chronos, he was also a mage. I don’t think he likes being alone, he always had a friend with him in the astral plane.

Finally was Z-san. I can’t actually remember his name, that’s why he’s Z-san. He did most of the real work, I think. He could talk and played with computers. He seems like he might be fun to tease.

Get this – everyone was so busy babbling away in the street that we got attacked by a SWARM of plague rats. These things were nasty! You could see through their skin. Their bite kind of hurt, and made you feel a bit sick. Fortunately I heal fast, and Apollo was nice enough to get me the antidote from his friend. Time-san blew them all away! And me too… GLARE! I don’t recover from magic fast… I had to sleep it off.

After that we wizened up and went somewhere safer to talk (sleep). Then we went to a nearby U-Store-It facility to get this really neat box. The box was part of some weird sort of ritual. We used it to purify a really NASTY place. Just being near Pier 201 made me feel sick and weak… It was toxic, I had to bring a gas mask! But the box made it all better. And the box had some neat loot in it.

The mages stared at it and told me the basics of what it was. I didn’t look closely because there were a bunch of blight gators charging at us (they tasted nasty by the way). The charms were basically portable spirit pacts. They made you more stubborn when you held them. I sold mine for LOTS of money. I might be able to buy some real gear now!

You know what else? Its REALLY hard to fight as a human! My punches seem to do nothing! Even when I’m on FIRE! Plus there’s a lot of times when I don’t want to be in hand to claw with them… Like those rats. YUCK. I’ve found a local archery shop where I can buy a crossbow and practice shooting. Just you wait! Soon you’ll see me tail held high, sturdy army vest, and crossbow in my paws! (and don’t forget the reflective shades to finish off the image)

That’s all for now! Sayonara!

Lucian smiled to himself as the runners left to plan for his job. He could only imagine the chaos that would ensue from the runners stealing a tank and driving it 30 miles down the highway. This was sure to be a swift and decisive blow to the Knights. Chuckling he leaned back and yelled for the cowed fast food workers to bring him a few more burgers.

June 7th, 2072
“This is live Action News from our Eyespy in the sky! There is a TANK running… Yes, we mean running on 8 legs, down route 3 from Nashua. They have had several altercations with Knight Errant security forces at this point and left carnage in their wake…”

Want to know more? Tough. You had to see it for yourself.

Puppies Everywhere!

The battered red pickup pulled into the storage garage. Cerra was very glad she’d rented a safe house to keep the puppies, she couldn’t imagine taking them all to her apartment. As she began unloading the puppies she almost immediately regretted not getting help. Even though they were only three months old they were heavy! The fact that she wasn’t much larger than the cages didn’t help either. The only way she was able to move them was through some weird combination of using her security drones and a wheeled cart.

After a substancial amount of effort she finished the job. She carefully lugged them off truck and wheeled them into the darkest corner of the garage. She didn’t know much about the breeds, but she at least knew that Gabriel Hounds were sensitive to sunlight.

Exhausted from moving the crates she crouched down to catch her breath and stared at the pups.

The Barghests were scary looking things… Spines on their backs, demonic red eyes and glowing fangs. The black one really was the perfect gift for her handler. A chill ran through her back as she pictured it fully grown (weighing in at 100kg) and accompanying her handler on a job. Her heart beat fast at the terrifying image of her protector and his pack.

The Gabriel Hounds were so ugly they were cute. Their faces looked disquietly human. They had vicious looking claws and seemed to blend into the shadows. Occasionally as they dreampt some of them would instinctively cast their mask and look like an innocent sleeping child. Watching them was kind of spooky. Cerra wasn’t sure how her handler would react to them, they are dogs, just not what one normally interacts with.

She knew he wouldn’t abandon them, especially on learning that the mother hadn’t survived. Taking her time and viewing the five puppies from the litter she was fairly confident which one would join the pack. There was one on the smaller side sleeping peacefully. It was the type that looked so innocent that you couldn’t ignore it. That was the one which he’d give a home. He would undoubtedly search for qualified owners for the others.

Cerra took a deep breath and with an nervous smile called her surprise in…

48 Hours

This following is an except from the Knight Errant incident report regarding the events at Crosspoint Towers on May 27th, 2072.

Regarding the second incident. We believe the two events were unrelated. Witnesses at the scene revealed that the individuals responsible for the altercation stayed significantly past the time of detonation. They very clearly were waiting for the WMC courier and his security team.

Due to issues with the facilities camera feeds we were unable to perform photo recognition of the culprets.

As is policy with respect to corporate affairs, officers on the scene did not interfere with WMC security procedure. Responsibility for the lost data rests entirely with WMC. Damage and injury reports were compiled after those involved left the scene and will be forwarded to WMC Legal Department.

—These runners certainly put on show… Its a fluke they didn’t get on the news.
—Sgt Tuesday

IC News Report

Boston Globe – Financial Section

With stock prices already shaky after the recent attack on the Biodyne facility, prices began to plummet after this weekend’s unfortunate events. Biodyne CEO Brian Jamiesan is currently in intensive care after being involved in a car accident Friday evening. The situation surrounding the accident is unclear, authorities currently believe his car’s pilot system malfunctioned. With Jamiesan not being expected to survive the week, the executive board assumed control of the company and agreed to NeoNet’s buyout proposal. Pending UCAS approval Biodyne will become a fully owned NeoNet subsidy for 13.5 Billion nuyen. unanimously decided to turn grant parent company NeoNet full control of BioDyne operations.

OOC: Changed for consistency, though the message remains the same.

Crosspoint Towers falling down...

The van shook as it drove, the force of the explosion and small debris reaching a block away. The runners glanced back at their handiwork, eyes straining to see through the thick smoke. They may have used too much explosives after all…

The windows on the 6th, 7th and 8th floors were all blown out. Alarms and sirens quickly filled the air as emergency services got to work and the lot filled with people as the workers evacuated.

The runners calmly drove on, entering the highway and disappearing in the distance…

This update has to be vague so it does not present any spoilers to 48 Hours.
